Year 1 National Curriculum
The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which our teachers have developed exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills. Please access the document below to learn more about what your child will be taught over the next year at St Mary's.
We have launched a new reading scheme to match with our phonics capabilities. This means that we are sending home books similar to those the children have been doing in class that same week.
The Read Write Inc book bag book is targeted at your child's reading ability - they are to read this book independently. Please go over the green/red words at the beginning, to ensure they understand the vocabulary. Ask them questions using the information at the back of the books or ask them to retell the story,
The Oxford Owl book is for shared reading with an adult. This is to help your child with comprehension and fluency with the aim to be reading 90 words a minute by the end of Year 2.

Things to Remember
Monday is PE for Miss Carr's class.
Wednesday is PE for Mrs O'leary's class
Reading books are to be changed weekly and your child is to read these at home and for you to write in their diary that they have done so.
Spellings are to be given out each Friday and will be tested the following Friday. These spellings will be in accordance with your child's Phonics group and they will work on these throughout the week in lessons. If you could do so at home too.
Knowledge organisers are handed out to the children at the start of each new Geography or History topic. If you could assist your child with learning these it will help them in class and continue their learning outside of school.
