Our Classroom

In Year 1 we aim for a smooth transition from the Early Years curriculum to Key Stage One curriculum.  Therefore the Year 1 classroom environments and outdoor provision allow for a balance between adult directed National Curriculum activities and opportunities for pupils to explore their learning independently through the mainly play based continuous provision. We have a number of areas of learning such as numeracy, writing, reading, phonics, small world areas both in our classrooms and outdoors.

Please take a look around our classroom.

Year 1 National Curriculum

The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which our teachers have developed exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills.  Please access the document below to learn more about what your child will be taught over the next year at St Mary's.

Phonics Support

We have launched a new reading scheme to match with our phonics capabilities.  This means that we are sending home books similar to those the children have been doing in class that same week.

The Read Write Inc book bag book is targeted at your child's reading ability - they are to read this book independently.  Please go over the green/red words at the beginning, to ensure they understand the vocabulary.  Ask them questions using the information at the back of the books or ask them to retell the story,

The Oxford Owl book is for shared reading with an adult.  This is to help your child with comprehension and fluency with the aim to be reading 90 words a minute by the end of Year 2.

Homework

In year 1 we send home 2 reading books a week. One of these books will be your child’s phonics book. This book is read daily with your child in their phonics lesson and you will find that their fluency will increase as they read this book more and more. The other book is a book bag book. This book is suited to your child’s phonics ability and is to be read by themselves independently at home. At the front of both of these books are the Green/Red words. Please go over these first with your child to ensure that they are fluent and also that they understand the meaning of any tricky vocabulary. This will ensure that when they read the story they can read fluently and comprehend the text so help promote their love of reading.

On a Friday we also have a spelling test and give out the next set of spellings. Each phonics group will have a different set of spellings as these will be sounds that are covered by that group in that week’s learning.

Phonics Screening Checks

The Year 1 phonics screening check is not a formal test, but a way for teachers to ensure that children are making sufficient progress with their phonics skills to read words and that they are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.  To find out more about these tests, please click on the picture link.
