Our classrooms offer an inviting and engaging environment in which the children are encouraged to become independent thinkers. They are a safe, happy place where our children feel comfortable and confident to explore and learn new things each day.
Our areas include English working walls, where the star writer of the week is always celebrated. Our Maths working walls, which include some key facts such as times tables for the childrent to make reference to. We also include a range of resources that the children can access to help them work out answers during lessons. We also have science walls, topic walls and a celebration wall which includes the children's birthdays and work to be proud of.
Our Book Corners
Both classrooms have an enchanting reading corner, which encourages the children to fall in love with reading and story books. The children have free flow access to this within the classroom and are encouraged daily to read in there. The children in Year 2 also have weekly access to our Key Stage 1 library, where they can take home a book of their choice to be returned the following week. We strive to encourage a love of books and reading in Year 2 and we greatly apprecite your help in reaching this goal.
Our classroom altars are a very special place where the children say collective worship prayers three times a day. The children are encouraged to bring in photographs of people they would like to remember in their prayers and use the alter in their own time to say a private prayer if they so wish. They also have access to child friendly Bibles and hymn books. On all our Altars in Key Stage 1, we encourage the children to acknowledge and follow the 5 W's; Welcome, Word, Witness, Worship and Welfare.
Year 2 National Curriculum
The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which our teachers have developed exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills. Please access the document below to learn more about what your child will be taught over the next year at St Mary's.
We have launched a new reading scheme to match with our phonics capabilities. This means that we are sending home books similar to those the children have been doing in class that same week.
The Read Write Inc book bag book is targeted at your child's reading ability - they are to read this book independently. Please go over the green/red words at the beginning, to ensure they understand the vocabulary. Ask them questions using the information at the back of the books or ask them to retell the story,
The Oxford Owl book is for shared reading with an adult. This is to help your child with comprehension and fluency with the aim to be reading 90 words a minute by the end of Year 2.

Things to Remember
The children will receive new spellings each Friday. These will be stuck into their home reading diaries and we encourage the children to practice them each night at home.
They will then be tested the following Friday in a spelling book which will stay in school.
Our spellings are taken largely from the Year 2 common exception word spelling list.
The children will now need a Forest School kit each Wednesday with wellies and warm clothing.
The children will have PE on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that they have full PE kit with them for their session.
